President Salva Kiir Mayardit has declared national mourning following the passing of former Anyanya leader and veteran statesman, General Joseph Lagu Yanga.
In a statement, President Kiir said General Lagu passed away peacefully this afternoon in Juba, describing him as a towering nationalist and liberation hero who dedicated his life to the cause of freedom for South Sudan.
President Kiir also praised General Lagu as a prominent South Sudanese statesman, military officer, veteran diplomat and politician, saying his contributions place him among the most historic figures in the country’s history.
